Dve Mogili Municipality is an agricultural
municipality which dependents on the agriculture in general as a source
of incomes and employment. It is located on an area of 342 295 decares.
More than half of its territory (255 753.8 decares, or 74.7%) is
farmland – cornfields and other cultivated areas. The unused farmland is
5033 decares, or 1.9%.
Agriculture is the main branch of the economy of the region. Natural and climatic conditions are suitable for development of the two sub-branches - crop and livestock production. Dve Mogili Municipality has traditions in the cultivation of cereals and industrial crops - wheat, barley, sunflower and maize. The wheat and sunflower plantations occupy the largest parts of the land. During past 10 years on the territory of the municipality the global climatic changes has affected the selection of crops which are beeng cultivated. Drought-resistant varieties of wheat are prefered, which 20 years ago didn’t grow very well. In 2009 a dry period, followed by rains caused problems to the farmers who sown the fields under wheat, but increased the crops of the producers who have bet on sunflower and maize. Overall, the region has begun a major replacement of the crops. New climate and biofuel market that appeared recently in the country led to the cultivation of some non-traditional crops such as colza and coriander towards the traditional wheat and barley. There is a serious drop in the viticulture compared with other fields in agriculture. The main reason is the restitution of existing vineyards, which have been devided into parcels of 0,3-1,5 decares and subsequently neglected by their owners. The only operating vineyard, used for the needs of the wine industry is on the territory of Shirokovo. Vegetables production in the municipality in not able to develop and reach previous capacity of production due to lack of manufacturing companies and problems with water supply of the ares caused by extremely poor condition of the irrigation canals and facilities which practicality are not used. For this reason the vegetables production covers small areas, mainly small farms for own use. During the last 2-3 years in villages of Baniska and Katselovo started development of greenhouse production of vegetables. The decline of irrigation due to the negative effects of the Structural Reform in agriculture - the division of irrigated land after restitution of private property of agricultural lands, the large number of producers in agriculture, the irrigation equipment that has been sold or damaged. Fruit-growing is not developed on the territory of the municipality. All existing plantations are mainly in farmers’ yards only for personal consumption. The perennial plantations that are inherited from the ex cooperatives are unsuitable for use because of their expired amortization period. Thanks to some positive trends and conditions in the last few years, mainly SAPARD (Special Accession Programme for Agriculture & Rural Development) and other similar programs for rural development, new perennial plantations, mainly with walnuts and apples have been created. They are created by new technologies with perspective varieties, but they don’t have any significant effect to the local economy because of the small areas that they occupy. Plant-growing in the municipality is currently divided between cooperations, companies, individual owners and farmers as follows: Cooperations:
Companies:
Individual owners:
Farmers - : 122 pcs. 20731,4 decares Regardless the divisions of the agricultural land, the forms of land management in the municipality vary. The cooperative form prevails – there are 9 cooperative farms in the municipality. They cultivate more than 62.57% of agricultural land in the municipality. The part of individual owners and companies representes 24.66% of the arable land. Farmers have smaller part - 12.77%. Thanks to financial support of EU Structural Funds for agriculture and rural development and the investment projects, the machinery park in the municipality is almost completely renovated with new harvesters of the highest class and high-producing tractors and equipment. High yields in recent years are a guarantee of keeping high technological processes and also because of the modern technologies which increased the production efficiency in this branch. |
